William A. Mudge Biography


Bill Mudge, a lifelong resident of Edwardsville, Madison County, has practiced law in Illinois for nearly two decades. He began his term as Madison County State's Attorney in November 2002.

He has a variety of legal experiences dating back to 1985, both as an assistant state's attorney and thereafter as an assistant public defender. He prosecuted juvenile delinquent and child abuse cases, and also handled a variety of felony and misdemeanor cases in those capacities.

Mudge entered private practice in 1987 with the Edwardsville firm of Lucco, Brown & Mudge. Highly respected both within and beyond the legal community, the firm has received the highest rating from Martindale-Hubbell, the leading peer review lawyer rating system in the United States.

Mudge has extensive experience in both civil and criminal cases, including arguing cases before the state appellate and supreme courts. Licensed to practice law in Illinois and Missouri, he is a member of the Illinois, Missouri and American Bar Associations. He holds licenses to practice before the Southern Illinois U.S. District Court and the Seventh Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. He is a past chairman of the criminal law committee of the Madison County Bar Association and served as the association's treasurer. He is a member of the Illinois State's Attorneys Association and the Southern Illinois Police Chiefs Association, and he currently serves on the Criminal Justice Advisory Board at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

Mudge has served on the city of Edwardsville's Human Relations Commission that promoted fair housing and resolution of discrimination complaints. Additionally, U.S. Senator Richard Durbin appointed Mudge in 1999 as the Chair of the U.S. Senate Judicial Nominating Commission for the Southern District of Illinois.

In 2004, Governor Rod Blagojevich appointed Mudge to the board of the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority. He currently serves on the Budget Committee and is Vice-Chair of the Planning and Research Committee.

Mudge graduated from Edwardsville High School, Illinois State University and St. Louis University School of Law. He currently resides in Edwardsville and has two children.
